Class40 - FRA79 – Matouba, Boatshed Performance had the pleasure of photographing her in race ready condition in St Malo for the start of the Route du Rhum 2014.
Third generation Class 40 from Owen Clarke Design Talented team behind the scenes working with Owen Clarke Design and Clay Oliver in the creation of a new Class 40 for 2009.
The yacht was beautifully built by a team of guys that includes artisans who, until recently, had been responsible for the construction of the latest Ericsson Volvo 70s. Part of this group comprises former mini sailor Ian Munslow, who raced his first generation Owen Clarke Class 40, Bolands Mill, to a third place in the 2006 Route de Rhum.
This completely new design began from a clean sheet of paper and takes into account the modifications made to the Class 40 rules in 2007. It is without doubt the most technically advanced Class 40 yacht created at that time. She is again the result of a collaboration by Owen Clarke Design and Americas Cup/Team New Zealand designer Clay Oliver. This is the same pairing responsible for the creation of the Open 60s Ecover 3 and Aviva, skippered by Mike Golding and Dee Caffari.
In addition, OCD again utilised the talents of French hydrodynamicist and BMW/Oracle design team member, Michel Kermarec for the evolution of the rudder, keel and bulb.
She was built at Plymouth, UK, by Stig McDonald , FCSD shipyard
Since then, all optimisation works were supervised by OCD, and performed by professionals in Lorient, France, under the control of Yacht Man shipyard.
In 2013 et 2014 optimization works were mainly but not exclusively targeted to :
- Lightment of the bot presently at the minimum of the Class40 rules (4500 kg)
- Mast and rigging change to lower the GC
- Rationalization of deck plan
- Removal of the front ballast to move it to the very rear in order to power her up during reaching
Conform to Class40 2013 rules.
