Broker's Comments

The very first review of the Contention 33 by Yachting World magazine back in 1976, described her as a "3/4 Tonner of just the right size for a racing boat which can be made into a sensible cruiser". A well found sea boat from the highly respected Doug Peterson and strongly built by Southern Ocean Shipyard she was at the forefront of 3/4 ton design and led the field into Contessa 34 OOD and others. A regular winner in Haven races back in her day (and that of her long time owner) Lipstick, for such is her name, was built in 1977 and was soon to be tested, as she is a survivor of the infamous '79 Fastnet race. Her present owner has raced her locally (not around the Fastnet as far as we know!) and has owned her for over 25 years. She is now comfortably equipped for cruising, is clean and dry below decks and it would appear that that has been her recent life; although she could still hold her own I'm sure, if club racing is your sport. To win races a crew must drive hard and sheet trimmers are as equally important as the helmsman but as Yachting World reported at the time of launch "cruising demands on speed are only as great as the crew wants, and the Contention 33 is a sweet boat to sail" and our Cardiff broker, Keith Doust, reports that "she goes to windward like a witch" - however they do it!
