We seem to have had a few Hardys on our books recently, and all shapes, ages and sizes. Here’s the baby of the bunch so far. Though small, the company’s key virtues of build quality and understated practicality stand out. Certainly, the blue hull needs cutting back and polishing, but the Hardy finish is high-quality and deep-seated, and modern hull cleaning materials will soon have her gleaming again. Likewise, the canopy badly needs reviving, but the fundamental quality and design of the cloth-work is likely to respond to proper treatment. An exhibit in the 1986 Southampton Boat Show, this boat is in good condition, and she has all you need in a baby cruiser: a hob, grill and sink in the basic but adequate galley; a separate heads compartment with a modern sea-toilet; berths for four, if you make up a transverse single across the cockpit. There are two demountable tables; one in the saloon and one in the cockpit. Don’t be deterred by what appears to be a dead body on the saloon floor: it’s a spare 4hp Mariner two-stroke outboard that would live on the spring-loaded outboard mounting on the transom when cruising. The main power comes from a 2002 70hp Suzuki four-stroke outboard, with its own stainless tank and spare. Recently-fitted trim tabs means she’s quick to plane, and cruises nicely and economically at 15 knots. Frankly, she’s everything you need.
