Broker's Comments

Naturally, from time to time I look at other brokers’ ads, to check current pricing and maybe learn something from their write-ups and presentation. One increasingly common trend I try not to emulate habitually is the effusive unctuous style. Ads like this open along the following lines: “We are humbly honoured to be graciously allowed the great privilege of offering for sale...” and then follows the description of some fairly unexceptional vessel. OK, I’m exaggerating a bit, but you get my drift. However, I was tempted to go a bit obsequious in the case of this vessel, though, because a) she’s a boat with a bit of history and, b) she is outstandingly pretty. Corribees are, as you are no doubt aware, the preferred starter boat of choice of young people intending to circumnavigate the world prior to reaching adulthood (cf Dame Ellen MacArthur). This is because they are exceptionally good sea boats for their diminutive size. This particular one is special. She is, in fact, the first Corribee ever built, in 1965. In 1998 she was virtually re-built at Claire Lallow’s yard in Cowes. Since then, it’s clear she has had oodles of loving care lavished on her, and the result today is a sparkling gem of a boat. Clinker-built and finished throughout in natural varnished wood, she looks absolutely stunning. Her cloth-work and running rigging is clean and fresh. Her sails are cream and crisp. So here goes: “We at Boatshed Portsmouth are humbly privileged etc, etc.” Oh, go and see the photos.
