This Hilyard 8 Tonner is a very good example of her distinctive kind. David Hillyard built aproximately 800 wooden yachts between 1920 and 1978, ranging in size from two and a half tonners to 28 tons. The 'ton' measurements are not based on actual displacement, but instead based on a system of official measurement which accounted for the number of 'tun' barrels a ship could hold. She has a heavy displacement with a long keeled and a delightful canoe stern. This model has steel bilge plates too. Cast Iron ballast keel fixed with galvanised mild steel keel bolts. Keel hung rudder. The hull has iroko planking, copper nail -spike and copper rove rivet-fastened, part oak and iroko stem piece, keel, keel deadwood and stern piece over oak sawn and steamed ribs-timbers and oak and iroko sawn frames and floors. Marine plywood decks with cream non-slip paint. This boat was surveyed in 2009, then all the recommendations carried out and re-surveyed in 2010 and signed off as all the work had been carried out. The owner plans to replace the rigging in Spring 2014 when the boat is due to go back into the water.
New antifouling including the hull topsides have had a further coat of white gloss

The accomodation is delighfully appointed. There are some very clever details. The galley is located forward of the saloon and a simple work surface can be unhinged to create a galley that spans the whole beam of the vessel, providing valuable work surface. There is storage in every conceivable part of the vessel. The settee berths are decent sizes. The forward cabin can be arranged as two singles or a double berth. This boat has a quaint but practical feel with some lovely lines both above and below decks.

Broker's Comments

These boat details are subject to contract
This Hilyard 8 Tonner is a real classic with pleasing lines. She has ample freeboard and moderate sheer, the canoe stern is a very distinctive and elegant feature too. The accomodation is very well thought out and she would be ideal for a couple or family who want to enjoy traditional sailing. She will handle beautifully so would be a great vessel for beginners or the seasoned sailor. If you enjoy spending time on your yacht then this wooden vessel will provide hours of pleasure both in terms of maintenance and sailing.
