James Wharram, a multi hull pioneer has been designing catamarans, since 1953 when he designed and built his first ocean going double canoe catamaran, the 7.16 m “Tangaroa”, which he subsequently sailed across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. This was followed by the 40-foot V-hull double canoe catamaran “Rongo” built in Trinidad, in which he made the first west to east Atlantic crossing by a multi hull in 1959.
Designed to be home built, but also built by professional yards all over the world, these Polynesian style catamarans were initially met with a lot of resistance from the yachting establishment but now after more than 50 years his designs have proven themselves time and again, crossing oceans, and can be seen in harbours all around the world.
