The Kong & Halvorsen Dawn 48 design was custom-commissioned by a group of sailors who aspired to own a world-class cruising design built in a high-quality Asian yard. They got together to select a naval architect and then a yard to create a boat that was not matched by any production-line model. The result was this beautiful German Frers design -- a performance-oriented and very capable ocean cruiser -- and a sturdy, beautiful execution from the Kong & Halvorsen yard.

Teak decks over fiberglass.

Water tanks are all interconnected. Fuel tanks are stainless steel. All fuel tanks cleaned 2013.

All through-hulls replaced 2010. Rudder removed and reinstalled with new bearings in 2014.

Waterline Boats / Boatshed Seattle has not independently measured dimensions and capacities, which are reported from literature or owner-provided information.

Accommodation

Total # of berths 6
No. of double berths 1
No. of single berths 4
Cabin(s) 2
Handbasin 2
Shower 1
Heads 2 heads (Manual)

This is designed as a very liveable boat for extended cruising, and would also make an excellent live-aboard. The saloon is large and open, with comfortable barrel chairs to starboard, and u-shaped dinette to port (which converts to a double berth). The galley offers a lot of counter space and cabinet storage, and is configured for safety in a seaway. The forward stateroom has two single berths, good storage space including a hanging locker, and an adjacent head compartment.

The aft cabin is reached via companionway down the starboard side, and features full standing headroom, two berths, two hanging lockers (and much more storage space), and a head compartment with separate shower compartment. A private companionway accesses the cockpit.

The aft companionway has a rolltop workbench (a very unique and useful feature) and a locker which houses the generator and watermaker components. The engine is also accessed from the companionway via large opening doors -- engine access is as good as you'll ever find on a sailboat of this size.

The interior is well-lit with portlights and windows all around, five deck prisms, three opening overhead hatches. Ventilation from four dorade boxes is also excellent. The interior is lovely, with nicely-crafted teak everywhere.

The center cockpit is also designed as a comfortable living area with a top-notch enclosure and high-backed bench seating.

Webasto hydronic furnace new 2003, with all new hoses in 2010. All sanitation hoses replaced 2009. Holding tank rebuilt 2012. LED interior lighting. Seafrost refrigeration new 2012 -- both 12v and with an engine-driven compressor.

Watermaker 15 gallons / hour. New membranes 2014. Engine-driven high-pressure pump rebuilt 2014.

Broker's Comments

The Kong & Halvorsen Dawn 48 Ketch, designed by German Frers as a commission from a group of experienced sailors, is a lovely boat that impresses immediately. Its beamy design provides excellent deck space and interior volume. The center cockpit offers outstanding protection and all-round visibility. The sail plan and rigging are configured for power AND for easy management. And the interior is attractive and voluminous -- extended cruising with two couples would be very comfortable.

The respected German Frers firm, it should be noted, is behind numerous highly-regarded Nautor's Swan, Hallberg-Rassy and Hylas designs. So while this ocean cruiser may not be well-known by brand name its provenance is excellent.

As can be seen in the details throughout this listing this boat has had numerous upgrades and additions, and has enjoyed the attention of owners who appreciate the importance of maintenance and reliability. The sellers are only this boat's second owners and have cruised her in Washington, British Columbia and Alaska for the past 20 summers. With these owners she has served as a platform for National Geographic expeditions into the wilds of coastal BC. She is configured to venture independently and has done it extensively.

This boat is equipped with newer equipment -- generator, a powerful 6 cylinder engine, watermaker, full cockpit enclosure, and much more. She is very ready to cruise.
