This week saw the start of the Trans-Atlantic Race 2011, with a host of yachts leaving Newport, Rhode Island between June 26th and July 3rd. 26 yachts started through three start days, one of them with some special relations for Boatshed Newport. The boat in question is the spectacle that is the 289’, three masted Perini Navi, The Maltese Falcon, which was built by Tom Perkins. Both Rob and Ali worked aboard another of Tom Perkins’ boats, the classic motor yacht, Atlantide. Rob was First Mate aboard Atlantide, and has sailed on the Falcon a number of times, and we are still good friends with a lot of the crew. It was great to see them here in Newport, and we wish them the best of luck in the Trans-Atlantic Race, and hope to see them here again soon!

Also racing is the new Puma Volvo Ocean Racing entry, Mar Mostro, which was built here in Rhode Island at New England Boatworks (NEB). Having recently been seen out in Narragansett Bay being put through her paces, she is now headed across the pond on her maiden voyage to the race finish line at The Lizard in the UK.
Having had some light winds to start with, it seems the fleet has got going, with Rambler 100 moving along at over 22kts! It is already an exciting race, and we at Boatshed Newport wish all entries fair winds and a safe journey. Of course, if any of you want to sell any of your boats when you have finished, we will be here in Newport, and would love to help you!

For those of you still here in Rhode Island and looking to buy or sell a yacht, be it 289’ or more in the realms of the ‘real world’, please have a look at our website, www.boatshednewport.com, then give us a call on 401-855-5970, or e-mail us at boats@boatshednewport.com. We look forward to hearing from you.
