Rolex Middle Sea Race prepares in Valletta

Thursday, 11 October 2018

The 2018 golden jubilee edition of Malta’s most famous yachting event promises to be the biggest ever. The Rolex Middle Sea Race, which this year marks the 50th anniversary of its founding, will again start from the historic Grand Harbour, in the capital Valletta, on 20 October. Cannon fire from the Saluting Battery perched high above will launch the fleet on a 606-nautical mile adventure around some of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful yet challenging waters.

This year represents a significant milestone for Title Sponsor Rolex, marking six decades of partnership at the pinnacle of the sport. The Rolex Middle Sea Race, organized by the Royal Malta Yacht Club, has been an integral part of the Swiss watchmaker’s yachting portfolio since 2002. That year, the event welcomed a then record 43 boats. Today, it regularly attracts over 100 entrants, with 2014’s field of 122 being the mark to beat. And, with 149 yachts already registered, a record entry is in prospect if all these cross the start line.

The CA hosts new North West Roadshow

Wednesday, 10 October 2018

The Cruising Association is organising a one-day North-West Roadshow for members and non-members on Saturday 10th November at the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. Topping the bill and rounding off a packed and informative line-up of talks is sailing journalist, author and broadcaster, Tom Cunliffe. The schedule of speakers includes Vyv Cox on ‘Things which can ruin your day at sea’; Julian Dussek takes us ‘Cruising the French Inland Waterways’; ‘Cruising the Biscay Coast of France’ is the title of Judith Grimwade’s presentation, and all three build in time for Q&A sessions. Derek Lumb is presenting cruising information on behalf of the CA’s Cruising Information Development Group (CIDG), followed by an Open Forum discussion. After an early buffet supper, Tom Cunliffe, in his own inimitable style will deliver a talk entitled ‘Ice with Everything’. We can only guess at its content! Anyone interested in attending needs to book separate tickets for the Afternoon session, the Evening session or both, plus the buffet, depending on preference. The booking also provides free entry to the Museum (open 1000-1700) which also has its own cafe.Full details, and all the information you need to book tickets: https://www.theca.org.uk/events/north_west_roadshow_10-11-18
