Dubai boosts sailing and marine sports with new deal

Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC), the government entity responsible for organising marine sports activity in the Emirates, and P&O Marinas, Dubai’s premium marina operator, a subsidiary of DP World, have signed a joint agreement aimed at boosting marine activities, academies, promoting sailing as an international sport and bolstering Dubai’s watersports offerings.

The move by Dubai International Marine Club and P&O Marinas is designed to ‘create a suitable environment for individuals looking to practice watersports while also promoting the development of major sporting events in the Emirates’.

The partnership will enhance the role of DIMC and P&O Marinas in supporting sailing as an international sport and to increase Dubai’s representation at the Olympics. Both partners will exchange information and areas of expertise in local and international sporting events, while aiming to establish maritime schools and academies to develop talent, and prepare trainers and technical committee.

The agreement was signed by DIMC chairman Ahmad Saeed Bin Meshar and Hamza Mustafa, chief operating officer at P&O Marinas at Hamdan Bin Mohammed Cruise Terminal.

Bin Meshar told Trade Arabia News Service: “Since the club was established in 1988, we have been working to promote marine sports in Dubai. The emirate’s beaches and various marine facilities have been major attractions for visitors and tourists.

“The agreement will contribute to strengthening Dubai’s global position in marine sports, and its leadership in many international indicators. This will be achieved by establishing and launching innovative and pioneering initiatives, benefiting from the shared capabilities of both sides, and motivating all segments of society to explore opportunities to practice their sporting hobbies. We also hope to develop talents and skills and prepare qualified professionals in marine sports.”
