For the last few months, Boatshed Newport has been busy working with Sea Legs, a wonderful charity dedicated to getting under privileged children out on the water. For these children, who would not normally get such an opportunity, it is an amazing chance to learn the basic skills of sailing, and general boating knowledge.
Sea Legs tireless leader is Richard Lathrop. With his invaluable sailing experience, and great patience, he takes children aged 9-17 through the Sea Legs step-by-step courses on their way to a Sea Legs Cadetship, and of course, a lifetime of fun on the water.

Each Cadet has a mentor. Mentors are volunteers and parents who guide and teach until the cadet reaches the rank of Navigator. Once aged 18, Navigators can themselves become mentors. These children are given the opportunity to get out and see the world in a way that would never be afforded to them if it were not for Richard and his fantastic team. There are also some graduates that have earned scholarships courtesy of this amazing program that will allow them to further their education, which may not have been possible with out the help of the Sea Legs program.

Sea Legs is a not for profit organization entirely funded by donations. This can be in the form of a cash donation, supporting them at boat shows, or donating a boat. Richard is able to use these boats for training purposes, and can then sell them to raise more funds. This is where Boatshed Newport comes in! We have a number of Sea Legs boats listed, all with varying characteristics.

One of the high lights is a beautiful 19’ Gentleman’s Launch built in the 1930’s. She is in stunning condition, but is a little impractical for training kids on. She is, however, perfect for elegant touring around harbors and lakes.
Richard does select donated boats for training that are great to sail, and safe for training children, and the next four boats we have listed have given great service and adventures. Please go to www.boatshednewport.com to view our photos of a Hunter 265, a C&C Encounter 26’, an Endeavor 32, and a Hallberg Rassey Mistress 32. Registered users can view all of the photos. Registering is quick, free and secure. If you have any further questions about yachts for sale in Rhode Island, contact Rob or Ali at Boatshed Newport.
