VIDEO: Surfers take on biggest waves in the world

Elite pro surfers gathered on the Portuguese coast last week as the 2021 Nazaré Tow Challenge got underway, where pro surfers are tackling some of the biggest waves on the planet.

Nazaré produces such massive waves thanks to its above and below water geography. Under the surface, Nazaré is home to a gigantic underwater canyon – three times the size of the grand canyon.

For the past decade, the small city of Nazaré Praia do Norte, Portugal has welcomed the most prestigious names in big-wave surfing to its annual competitions.

The 2021 Nazaré Tow Challenge was scheduled for a date between November 2021 and March 2022 – event officials monitor swell-producing storms, watching for the precise conditions that will produce waves in the competition range. It was deemed this week’s conditions were ideal for competition.

Once the call is made by the event officials, competitors will have 72-hours notice to be ready to compete.
