Ela Miller’s winning photo

Ela Miller from Christchurch, Dorset and Steve Cayley from Torquay, have claimed spots nine and ten on the 2020 ilovesailing calendar, leaving just two more places up for grabs.

As well as claiming their spot on the 2020 calendar Ela and Steve also win:

  • Two tickets to the Southampton International Boat Show for the official prize giving, plus afternoon in the RYA Members’ Lounge
  • Canvas print of their winning entry
  • A copy of the final printed calendar
  • A selection of RYA goodies
  • And of course the much loved ilovesailing rubber duck

Steve, who also secured spots on the 2018 and 2019 ilovesailing calendars commented:  “Wow, third year in a row! Many thanks for the opportunity to once again feature in the ilovesailing calendar I am delighted and at the same time surprised. For me it is great to have my photography recognised in this way and given such a profile.”

Steve Cayley’s third winner

Steve went on to explain more about his winning shot entitled ‘Searching for clear air’:  “I drove up from Devon at the crack of dawn to photograph the 2019 Round the Island Race from Hurst point. Wind direction –  south easterly  –  couldn’t have been better as it resulted in the majority of the fleet flying spinnakers as they sailed towards Hurst and on to the Needles and with the sun backlighting the sails … Perfect!”

Caribbean Dream’ is the title of the second winner for July taken by Ela Miller.  Ela, who was also a winner in 2018 commented: “Being chosen as a winner is delightful, just ducky! I’m very proud to be a winner for the second year in a row too!  Thank you for the competition that prompts me to go out there to try to capture what sailing means to me.”

Ela went on to explain more about her shot: “The photograph was taken in The Solent while on our little sailing holiday at the beginning of July. We so often glorify the foreign but do not appreciate what is on our doorstep. ‘Caribbean style sailing holidays’ are possible on our own waters, no need for a big, luxury yacht either…

“We had an amazing week on our 22ft, 40 year old boat and capturing the essence of that holiday spirit in the photograph was a bonus.”

With 31 spectacular images to choose from judging was extremely difficult, however Ela and Steve’s images really caught the judges eye.  “It is definitely a highlight of the month choosing the winning shots for the calendar”, commented ilovesailing co-ordinator Emma Slater.  “The quality of the images is amazing and seeing the vast array of styles, boats and locations is wonderful, it goes to show just how diverse sailing is.”

The final two spots for August will now be selected from all the entries received between March and July, giving entrants a second shot a winning a spot on the calendar.

“We receive so many fantastic images each month that choosing just two is always difficult.  By picking our August winners from all the entries received it means everyone has not one but two chances to claiming their place on the calendar”, Emma explained.

The 2020 calendars will go on sale at the 2019 Southampton International Boat Show in September, with the first 50 people to purchase a copy also receiving a FREE 2019 yellow ilovesailing rubber duck.  Alternatively the calendars will also be available to purchase via the RYA web shop, www.rya.org.uk/shop from 13 September.

The ilovesailing calendar competition will re-open in March 2020.  But don’t forget…as well as the calendar competition the ilovesailing page runs its ever popular weekly caption competition, giving you a chance to share your funny, clever and witty captions in a bid to win an ilovesailing duck.
